New Home Ownership

Habitat for Humanity has been active in Southwest Alabama (HFHSWA) since 1988 and has completed construction on more than 270 new homes.  HFHSWA serves disadvantaged families in need of safe, decent, affordable shelter.  Our vision is to eliminate substandard housing in Mobile, Washington, and Clarke Counties.

Habitat for Humanity is a faith-based organization that builds and rehabilitates simple, affordable homes in partnership with people in need.  Due to Habitat’s no-profit, we will assist with obtaining an affordable mortgage, and because homes are built primarily by volunteers, mortgage payments are affordable to low income families who are unable to obtain conventional financing.  Habitat homeowners are required to attend financial management training and learn how to provide maintenance to their new homes. They also invest 300-400 hours of “sweat equity” -- time spent building their own home and homes for other people.  As our saying goes, “It’s not a hand out. It’s a hand up!”

There is both reason and opportunity to be involved in building a brighter future for our partner families and our community.  No family should have to choose between having a decent roof overhead and putting food on the table.  Our need is great.  Each Habitat home costs approximately $90,000 to construct; 35,000 nails; 175 volunteers who contribute 1,700 cumulative hours combined over a 14 to 16 week build schedule period.
