Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama’s A Brush with Kindness program is an exterior repair program created to assist low-income homeowners who are struggling to maintain their home. The majority of the applicants are elderly, disabled or lack the financial ability to hire a contractor.
Applicants must meet three criteria to qualify:
Applicant must show a need for assistance with repair.
Applicant must provide proof of ownership of the home, free of judgments or liens.
Applicant must be able to pay up to $500 toward the cost of the project.
If an applicant meets all criteria, a home visit is scheduled and the Construction Director will create a scope of work for materials and labor needed, including cost estimates. Once the funding has been secured (minus the homeowners contribution), the homeowner is notified. He or she must pay the required amount and the project is scheduled. Volunteers are used for as much work as possible to keep the cost of repair affordable.
Most projects cost between $3,000 and $10,000. Work on the houses often include roof repair or replacement, exterior door and window replacement, replacement of broken, rotten, or missing boards on siding or porches and exterior painting. The time frame for work is generally 2 to 4 days.
Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama is unable to accept applications until the remaining projects are completed. Over 200 people are currently on the waiting list, therefore there is a great need to complete these projects.
